Historical Data "Long before the settlement of Upper Canada and the signing of the Gunshot Treaty at The Carrying Place in 1787, the Mississauga Indians were the acknowledged owners of the land about the Bay of Quinte and Lake Ontario. It was from them the British Government purchased the right of ownership. The Indians were paid certain stipulated payments annually, in presents. Each year the Indians would travel by canoe to Kingston to receive their payment.
The Mississaugas reserved some possessions in and about this area until 1856. Among these reservations were Bald Head at Weller's Bay, Nicholson Island in Lake Ontario and the islands in the Bay of Quinte from Presqu'lle to Gananoque.
The Island in the Bay of Quinte closest to "The Carrying Place", is known today as Indian Island. On an early map in possession of Crown Lands, it was named Mississauga Island. Older residents about the area call it Cronk Island. According to Canniff, it has been named Fighting Island."1 (So named after a skirmish between the Mississauga Indians and the Loyalist Supporters - The Mohawks.)
