The Carry Place

Crossroad of History

When the American Revolution ended, thousands of Loyalists went to what is now the Maritimes Provinces. Later, they migrated towards Lower Canada in the Bay of Quinté region.  In 1784 Canada was not known as ‘Canada’ – but the Province of Quebec in America.  Only after the signing of the Gunshot Treaty in 1787 (known as the Toronto Purchase), the Carrying Place, situated as it was on the Indian Portage, became a focal point for travelers.  Another interesting point in history, when war broke out on June 12, 1812 with the Yankees, the wounded from Lundy’s Lane were taken across at the Carrying Place enroute to the hospital in Kingston. (“Gunshot and Gleanings of The Historic Carrying Place, Bay of Quinté”. Sponsored by 7th Town Historical Society)

Another interesting point in history, the Bay of Quinté Region may be regarded as the earliest mission field in America.  Of the four Missionaries who came with Champlain from France, in 1615, one at least accompanied him in his journey up the Ottawa, across to Georgian Bay and down the Trent to the Bay. For 150 years before the capture of Canada by the English, and nearly 170 before Upper Canada was first settled, there existed at the Bay Quinté an active mission of Roman Catholic Christianity.  From the nature of the relics found in the Indian burying ground, near the Carrying Place, at Bald Bluff, by Weller’s Bay, it might even have been situated there. (“The Settlement of Upper Canada” by Wm. Canniff, M.D. M.R.C.S.E.)

The Carry Place

*  2002

Situated on the border of two dynamic zones – Northumberland and Prince Edward County, the region is riding the crest of both population growth and demographic shift to both preference for Country Living and telecommuting; especially with the latter expanding its reputation as the “next” Wine Region of Ontario.  Minutes to Brighton, Trenton, Belleville and Kingston, as well with its proximity to the Murray Canal, Carrying Place is poised to appreciate exponentially in the next few years.

The Carry Place

*  A Platinum Opportunity

Through the years, the Quinns have amassed 545 acres in Carrying Place, with approximately 5,000 feet of water frontage at Weller’s Bay just south of the Murray Canal with Regional Road 64 running through the parcel.  A local developer, visionary as he might have been, experienced financial difficulties after purchasing the property and sinking in a “considerable amount of money” in soft costs.  (Phase I of Site Investigation has been completed by Environmental Strategies Limited – dated August, 1990 and is available to the Purchaser)
