A Glimpse into Wolfe Island
Wolfe Island is the largest of the Thousand Islands - where Lake Ontario ends and the St. Lawrence River begins its flow to the Atlantic. Known destination for the Kingston crowd for its beautiful sunrises, breath-taking sunsets and spectacular night-time skies - yet almost undiscovered by the rest of the world. In recent years, it is also home to the eco-friendly Wind Farm contributing to a good part of the regional power requirement.
Since time immemorial, there were Native American settlements on Wolfe Island. In the very early days, the 1000 Islands region were known at the “The Garden of the Great Spirit”. It was the French who later named the area “Les Milles Illes” – although in fact there are over 1,800 islands in total.
Samuel de Champlain, the French explorer and founder of New France, was probably the first European to set foot on Wolfe Island when he crossed from the States to Canada in 1615. In 1675, the Island came under French ownership and named “Grande Ile” a.k.a. “Isle Buade”, after Count Louise de Buade Frontenac, the ruler of “New France”. The very first pioneers on the Island were two French families who settled in Marysville in the early 1700’s. In the early 1800’s, a number of United Empire Loyalists followed. Then there were the Scottish and Irish immigrants. In 1822, the present border in the 1000 Islands was fixed and Wolfe Island became Canadian. After World War II, the Dutch immigrants joined the expanding population.
Wolfe Island has its share of colourful history: i) The first cheddar cheese in Ontario was made in the Island c 1860’s. ii)Ardath House, built with limestone from the Island’s quarries and resembled a French feudal castle, was built c. 1828 by David Alexander Grant who was married to the Baroness of Longueuil. Sadly the castle was destroyed by arson in 1929. iii) A family on Ferguson Point was part of the “Underground Railroad” in the 1800’s. iv) The first ferry service started in 1802. The present motor vessel, “Wolfe Islander III” was brought into serve in 1976. Its capacity is 55-60 vehicles and a maximum of 400 passengers.
The Island is now home to some 1,200 full time residents – doubling in the summer months with cottagers. The village of Marysville is the hub of the community with its 3 beautiful churches and quaint Town Hall constructed in 1859. Artisans, craft shops, a local nursery, several B & B’s, Grocery Store, Butcher Shop, Five Star Restaurant at the Brown’s Bay Inn, Horse and Carriage Services, Boat works & Marinas, Construction Firms, Computer Services and a camp ground are amongst the 70 plus Island businesses. Visitors and residents enjoy biking, fishing, sailing, hunting, golfing and so on. Summer events are plentiful which include The Music Festival, The Wolfe Island 5k – 10k Run, The Annual Family Baseball Tournament, Horse Shows and so on.
